NIPT (Cell-Free DNA Testing)

Non-invasive prenatal testing

NIPT (cfDNA test)

Non-invasive prenatal testing

Overview:

NIPT analyzes cell-free fetal DNA from maternal blood to assess probability for trisomies 21, 18, and 13. Available from 10 weeks with 99%, 98%, and 92% detection rates respectively. Most results in 7 days; includes baby’s sex. Completely non-invasive with viability scan included.

Understanding NIPT Results:

High-probability results require CVS or amniocentesis for confirmation. Low probability (less than 1 in 10,000) makes trisomy very unlikely. 2-5% of tests don’t yield results on first blood draw (technical, not baby-related); free retesting has 80% success rate.

NIPT Limitations:

NIPT doesn’t detect rare chromosomal and genetic disorders or physical defects (heart, brain, spine, etc). Regular ultrasounds remain essential: Nuchal scan (12-14 weeks), Anomaly scan (20-24 weeks), and Growth scan (30-32 weeks). We recommend basic panels only, not extended testing, for now.
